Delivery of the Fuselage and Wing (March 7th, 2007)
This day had been awaited with great anticipation! For some time we'd been
talking about getting a 'big' aircraft at Speke and following some abortive
attempts it all seemed a bit unlikely - but then came THE BRIT!
The fun started on the evening of the 6th when I received a phone call from
Peter, the driver of the huuuge low loader carrying the 100' wing section.
"Where can I park" he wanted to know. Where on earth do you park a rig that
big!? After a quick runaround in the car, a suitable overnight spot was
found and Peter settled in for the night.
Wednesday the 7th dawned as expected, and it was an early start down at the
old airfield, to bring the huge wagons in carrying the Brit it was necessary
to cross a field belonging to Peel Holdings and drive onto the rear of the
apron. With the fences down, it was time to start! First came Barry
Parkhouse with the front fuse section, this was parked up out of the way
since this would be the last section we needed in place. Next came the
rear fuselage, 70' of British Aircraft on a low loader is a sight to see!
Finally, it was time for the big one... Peter reversed his wagon across the
field and onto the apron as smoothly as if he had done this job a thousand
times before - oh, he probably has!
With all three sections now parked up on the apron, it was time to place the
sections where we needed them. In came a fairly large crane from Roadcraft
which had no problems at all dealing with the 6-7 ton loads and each section
was precisely and expertly placed where we wanted them.
The skills of the crane operator and the wagon drivers is quite something to
see. What to us looked like a major issue was nothing to these guys and we
really appreciated the patience, skill and good humour they displayed.
Thanks guys!
